Grassroots Efforts

At the Cure JM Foundation, grassroots fundraising efforts serve a dual purpose. They help to secure funding to support the activities of the foundation and future research, and they help to raise public awareness of this disease.

The following grassroots efforts have been very successful in accomplishing these goals. If you would like to try one of these events in your area, please contact for materials and assistance.

Garage Sale
Nic Lundborg, a realtor with RE/MAX, sponsored a neighborhood garage sale in which 65 homes participated. Each home was asked to give 10% of their proceeds to the Cure JM Foundation, to help their neighbor and friend, Parker. Nic and RE/MAX are providing matching funds for all donations. Cure JM would like to thank Nic and all of our neighbors who have made very generous contributions.

Kick-a-thon
West Coast Martial Arts Academy will be teaming-up with Cure JM to have a Kick-a-thon and a Chop-a-thon. Students at the Academy will have sponsors donating to Cure JM for each kick they can do. Giuseppe Aliotta, the martial arts master and instructor, will also see how many wooden blocks he can break.

School Fundraising Efforts
Several campaigns have been very successful at St. John School where Parker (a child with JM) attends. “Pennies for Parker” was a campaign where the children and their families brought in their spare change (and bills) for the Cure JM Foundation. It lasted for 6 weeks and brought in over $3,000. It also raised awareness of JM and prompted several parents to volunteer their help to the foundation.

Many students even held their own lemon-aid stands, hot chocolate stands and bake sales for Cure JM.

Benefit Concert
Several local bands have offered to play a benefit concert for Cure JM in the fall. A local concert hall has donated its space for the event.

Lemon-Aid Stands
Several lemon-aid (and cookie) stands have been held to raise money for the Cure JM Foundation. These have helped raise awareness of the disease and also money for research. At our last stand, we raised over $700. We hand-out information on JM and the foundation so that public awareness and donations will start to increase.

We have also received media coverage of our lemon-aid stands. The coverage has included several newspaper articles as well as two radio features. This helped increase awareness of JM and also directed people to the lemon-aid stands to donate. Many of the donors made special trips to the stands after seeing or hearing about our efforts to raise money for JM.

Theatre Benefit
La Costa Canyon High School has offered to donate the proceeds from a play to benefit the Cure JM Foundation.

Grant Writing
Cure JM has started the grantwriting process with an all-volunteer, experienced grantwriting team. Our team even includes the previous Chair of Grants for the Susan B. Komen Foundation.

Media Relations
We have started developing relationships with the local media, with plans to develop contacts with national media next. For information on making media contacts in your area, please call us.
