What type and how much physical activity does your JM child do?

  • When [my daughter] was first diagnosed she had to limit any physical activity. Once the inflammation settled down she started PT and OT for about 2 months and we continued at home after that. NOW she is involved in any physical activity her little heart desires. She loves swim club, running, dance, riding her bike and playing outside. She is strong and very active.

  • Although [Q’s] doc says she does have some physical weakness, it is not apparent in her daily play or activity. She does everything her peers do, only a little slower. Our rheumy suggested doing dance, tae kwon do, or gymnastics instead of physical therapy, so she does gymnastics. Again, she does all the exercises the other kids do, she is just slower.

  • [My daughter] sets her own limits and shows more and more endurance everyday. If it hurts she doesn't do it.

  • [L] has never been told he has to limit his physical activity. At diagnosis, he was not really able to do anything physical; but now, he can do quite a few things. He is taking karate; and hopefully testing for a blue belt this weekend. He is also playing baseball. He has a lot of trouble with balance in karate, which may keep him from progressing too much further. And, he cannot kick as high as the other kids. In baseball, he cannot run as fast as the other boys, and he tires VERY easily, especially when it's hot and sunny. I would never sign him up for soccer or any sport that he has to run a lot. That would be too hard on him. He did see a PT early in his disease, but he hasn't gone in a while. She gave us a lot of stretches and "play" ideas to increase his strength and endurance.

  • [My son] continued with modified gymnastics post diagnosis, but finally too frustrated to not do what others did. He did play t-ball the 1st year but sat out a lot. Last year he was unable to play. He did ski but with the support of a great teacher in the local kid's program. Now that he's doing better he played soccer in the fall, skied with out someone picking him up and may try baseball this summer. [My son] did 1 1/2 years of physical therapy and does yoga therapy currently which has been great for his flexibility. After last school year of skipping recess he now goes out and plays with the kids and also plays more with his big brother.

  • [L] is in year five with JDM and is able to do almost anything she wants to do. She can swim and skate and seems to be very flexible. I know she is still working on her endurance, which will take time to get back to normal, but she is very strong now and we are very thankful!

  • [My daughter] was weak when first diagnosed, but after treatment she is now very active & can do most anything in P.E. at school and on the playground. The only thing we notice is she sometimes shows more fatigue after lots of activity. She refuses to give up or slow down!
